State/Territory Olympic Advisory Committees (OACs)
State Olympic Councils (SOCs)
The OACs and SOCs are charged with the following functions:
- To raise funds to support the Australian Olympic Team
- Promote the Olympic Movement in their state or territory in coordination with the AOC
- Advocate for Member Sports of the state or territory
- Provide strategic advice to the AOC in relation to community programs, Olympian programs and any other program to further the objectives of the AOC
In co-operation with the OACs and SOCs, in co-operation with the AOC and State and Territory Team Appeal Committees, they conduct national Team Appeal fundraising during each Olympiad.
The funds are raised through gala dinners and other events held in each State and Territory which are supported by companies and individuals. State and Territory Governments also make significant donations to the appeal. Funds raised are used for the sole purpose of sending the Australian Team to the Olympics. Monies raised do not contribute to the AOC’s operations.

It is the embodiment of the AOC’s determination to contribute more broadly to the community.
In coordinating with OACs and SOCs, the AOC has developed and invested in a number of programs to ensure all engagement programs provide benefits to the community and enhance the Olympic Movement in Australia.
The AOC offers it’s sincere thanks to the enthusiastic and committed group of volunteers involved with each OAC and SOC.
State Olympic Councils Review - March 2020
The AOC undertook a nationwide review of the structure and purpose of all seven SOCs in March 2020.
A new, less formal governance structure was developed and endorsed by the AOC Executive. A number of State/Territory Olympic Council Executive Boards decided to take the proposed change in structure to their members for voting, which resulted in the formation of many State/Territory Olympic Advisory Committees (OACs).
In 2021 the New South Wales Olympic Council, Tasmania Olympic Council and Australian Capital Territory Olympic Council opted to become OACs.
The South Australian Olympic Council and Victoria Olympic Council became OACs in 2022. Relevant changes were made in the AOC Constitution to reflect this. The AOC acknowledges the history of the State Olympic Councils, which is reflected in the awards categories of the relevant State/Territory OACs.
Please click the links to the State/Territory OACs and SOCs above to view their governance structure, information on their elected (Councils) or appointed (Advisory Committees) officials, contact information and constitution or terms of reference.
The AOC Constitution states under section 6.1 that an objective of the AOC is to ‘develop, promote and protect the principles of Olympism and the Olympic Movement in Australia in accordance with the Olympic Charter and all regulations and directives issued by the IOC’.
In actioning the objective stated in section 6.1 of the AOC Constitution, the AOC recognises the importance of the State/Territory OACs and SOCs.
