William's Story

1889 – 1958

The Tasmanian-born and Melbourne-educated Allan Stewart was undertaking his medical studies in London when he was brought into the Australasian athletics team for Stockholm 1912. At the time, he was the 100 and 220 yards champion of Scotland and could have competed for either Australasia or Great Britain at Stockholm. He chose Australasia.

At Stockholm, he performed the best of all of Australia’s athletes, winning his heats in the100 and 200 metres, before being eliminated in the semi-finals. After the Olympics, he returned to his medical studies and seriously embraced rugby union.  He became so proficient at the game that he represented Scotland, the land of his ancestors, in four Tests scoring eight tries. He served in World War I.
