Wendy's Story

1974 -

South Australian Wendy Schaeffer became the youngest woman to win an equestrian gold medal when she joined with Phillip Dutton, Andrew Hoy and Gillian Rolton to win the team three-day event in Atlanta. Riding Sunburst, Schaeffer was outstanding, recording the best results of any of the riders in the team event. This included a perfect round in the final jumping phase to help seal the win. Her performance was all the more remarkable because she broke her leg only months before the Games. The team has since been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Schaeffer remains actively involved in the sport, including specialist work with horses as an animal physiotherapist.
