Tim's Story
The 17-year-old Canberra-based schoolboy, Tim Cuddihy upstaged his more fancied teammates, Simon Fairweather (defending Olympic champion) and David Barnes, to win the bronze medal in the individual archery at Athens 2004.
The archery events were held in the 2300-year-old Panathinaikos Stadium, the site of the Athens 1896 Olympic Games. The last Australian to win an Olympic medal in the stadium was Edwin Flack, who won the 800-1500 metres double in 1896. On the way to the medal, Cuddihy eliminated two of the much-vaunted South Koreans. In the team event, Cuddihy, Fairweather and Barnes finished a creditable sixth behind the victorious South Koreans, who regained their pre-Olympics form. Cuddihy came out of retirement in 2007 however failed in his attempt to be selected for Beijing 2008.
