Thomas's Story
In the men’s 470 medal race at Sydney 2000, for Tom King and crew Mark Turnbull to claim gold they needed to finish within five places of the USA.
The pair took full advantage of their downwind speed under spinnaker to sprint through the fleet, after being towards the tail of the field at the first cross.
On the last windward leg, the Australians briefly took the lead but sailed conservatively and trouble free thereafter to cross in second place to clinch the gold medal to the shrill of horns and the roar of the crowd on Bradley’s Head.
Coach Victor Kovalenko thought they "showed maturity" by not going for the win.
"They got in front for a while but decided to drop back to be sure of the gold.”
