Taryn's Story

1975 -

Taryn Woods won a gold medal for Australia in women’s water polo at Sydney 2000. From New South Wales, Woods is a member of one of Australia’s most respected water polo families: her father David (1972, 1976) and brother Gavin (2000, 2004) are both dual Olympians in the sport. As well, Woods’ cousin, Bronwyn Mayer, was a team-mate on the Olympic team. Playing in her hometown, Woods revelled in the atmosphere of the first Olympic women’s water polo tournament. Australia won four of its five preliminary round games, then scored two goals in the final 90 seconds of its semi-final against Russia to win 7-6. The gold medal final was even more dramatic, with the team beating the United States 4-3 on a goal with 1.3 seconds remaining by Yvette Higgins.
