Sophie's Story

Sophie Muir made history at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, becoming Australia’s first female Olympic speed skater. Muir came into the sport from a background in inline speed skating in which she was a national champion, world champion and world record holder. After retiring from inline in 2002, Muir pursued work and study and whilst backpacking through Europe met up with a former inline coach who persuaded her to try speed skating on ice. Muir posted some admirable results including new national records in her first season and earned her a place at the Vancouver Games. She competed at the Winter Olympics after just 15 months on the ice, finishing 29th in the 500m and 30th in the 1000m.
