Simone's Story
1973 -
Simone Hankin won a gold medal for Australia in women’s water polo at Sydney 2000. It was the first time women’s water polo had been played at the Olympics. From New South Wales, Hankin was a tremendous swimmer, her pace a constant menace for opponents. This was matched by good offensive instincts – she scored four goals during the tournament. Hankin also proved her courage in the tournament – she dislocated her shoulder in the team’s 7-6 semi-final win against Russia. Despite this injury, she returned to play in Australia’s unforgettable last-second 4-3 final win over the United States.
