About Simon
Simon Leung began playing Badminton around the age of six. Initially he played with his family because they all played, but it didn’t take long before he was playing and competing in his home city of Brisbane.
Simon began competing professionally in 2010. He competed at the under 15 nationals and represented the national junior team until 2014. His international debut for Australia came in 2013 at the Oceania Championships.
His early career was highlighted by his appearances at the Junior World Championships and the opportunity to represent Australia at the 2017 World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.
In 2019 Simon began to find success in the mixed doubles arena alongside teammate Gronya Somerville. The pairing won silver at the Yonex Waikato International in 2019 and at the event they went down in the final to Japan's Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito.
Simon and Gronya have also gone back-to-back at the Oceania Championships, winning both the 2019 and 2020 tournaments.
Simon built on his successful men's doubles career where, alongside teammate Mitchell Wheller, he won silver at the 2019 North Harbour International. The pair narrowly lost to China's Zhuan Yi Xuheng and Bin Rong Zhang.
Simon made his Olympic debut at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo 2020 Games, alongside Gronya in the mixed doubles. The pair finished third in Group C, with their 2-1 victory over Danish pair Fruergaard and Thygesen not enough to advance.
