Sam's Story
Darwin born Sam McGregor started playing water polo at the age of 12. In 2002 he was selected in the Australian team for the Unicom Cup in Hungary. McGregor was 17 and the youngest player on the team. He made his Olympic debut at the Athens Games in 2004 where the team finished ninth. In Beijing 2008 he played centre back for Australia where the team placed eighth.
Returning to compete at his third Olympic Games, McGregor was one of the team’s most experienced players at the London 2012 Games. After losing three of their first four matches, the Australians knocked off Greece 13-8 to book a spot in the quarter-finals against Serbia. The Aussies took a 7-4 halftime lead before going down 8-11 to the eventual bronze medallists.
