Robert's Story

1981 –

Robert Hammond won two medals for Australia in men’s hockey: gold in 2004 and bronze in 2008. The Queenslander’s stamina, control and creativity made him an important member of the Kookaburras’ excellent midfield arsenal. In Athens, the team beat defending champions the Netherlands 2-1 in extra time in the gold medal final to record a memorable victory. The success finally ended Australia’s men’s hockey hoodoo at the Olympics. Before 2004, Australia had won three silver medals, three bronze medals and been placed fourth twice in Olympic tournaments. Hammond returned to the Games in Beijing, where Australia won bronze.
