Richard's Story
1984 -
Richard Thompson won a silver medal for Australia in baseball in 2004. From New South Wales, the right-hander was part of a strong Aussie pitching squad in Athens. He was used as a reliever in two games during the tournament. Australia reached the semi-finals by winning four of its seven preliminary round matches, finishing fourth. It beat Japan, the top-ranked team, 1-0 in the semi-final, before losing the final 6-2 to Cuba. The result was Australia’s first Olympic baseball medal. Thompson has since played Major Leagues baseball for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
