Patrick's Story

1984 -

The team of Patrick Murphy, Grant Hackett, Grant Brits and Nick Ffrost finished a creditable third behind the Michael Phelps-led United States and Russia in the 4x200m relay. Australia with Kirk Palmer and Leith Brodie had qualified for the final with the sixth fastest time. The format of the team in the final was somewhat of a surprise with Brits and Frost arriving in Beijing probably expecting to be solely heat swimmers. Their excellent performances in the heats meant that they were retained for the final.

Murphy also won a bronze medal as a heat swimmer for the 4x100m relay. Australia finished a creditable third behind two teams, United States and France that were laden with crack sprinters in the 4x100m relay. Eamon Sullivan led off with a new world record for the individual event.

Murphy made his Olympic debut in Athens where he competed in the 200m backstroke.
