Patrick's Story
From Narromine in NSW, Pat McCutcheon began playing sevens during his time at boarding school in Sydney and represented his nation in the Australia Under 19s and Australian Schoolboys team before he made his Sevens World Series debut in 2007. He captained the Australian side to silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games before turning his attention to the fifteen man game. He played for the NSW Waratahs and helped them to the 2014 Super Rugby title before he returned to sevens midway through 2015. He played in the 2015/16 World Series before booking his spot in the final twelve for the Rio 2016 Games.
The Australian team got off to a slow start in Rio after opening the tournament with a 31-14 point loss to France. The side bounced back with a 26-12 victory over Spain before they kept their medal hopes alive with a 12-5 win over South Africa in their final group match. They again faced the South African side in the quarter-finals and it was the BlitzBokke who reversed the result to claim a 22-5 win over the Aussies and move through to the final four. Losses to Argentina and France followed for Australia who finished the tournament in eighth.
