Norma's Story

1936 –

At Melbourne 1956, Norma Thrower (later Austin) finished third behind the winner, Shirley Strickland de la Hunty, in the 80m hurdles. With Strickland de la Hunty, Thrower and the sixth-placed Gloria Cooke Australia had half the runners in the final. A hurdles specialist, Thrower won three Australian titles and the gold medal at the Empire and Commonwealth Games at Cardiff 1958 in the 80m hurdles. At Rome 1960, she was eliminated from her favourite event in the semi-finals after equalling the then world record of 10.6 sec in March of that year.
