Nick's Story
1983 -
Nicholas ‘Nick’ Kimpton won a silver medal for Australia in baseball in 2004. The West Australian was a left-hander both at the plate and in the field. Australia reached the semi-finals by winning four of its seven preliminary round matches, finishing fourth. This meant it would face Japan, the top-ranked team in the competition. However, Japan’s only loss in the preliminary round had been to the Aussies, a 9-4 drubbing. Australia again got the better of the all-professional Japanese team, winning 1-0 to ensure a medal finish. In the final, Australia lost to two-time Olympic champion Cuba, 6-2. The silver remains Australia’s only Olympic baseball medal.
