Nicholas's Story
1969 –
Nick A’Hern was a specialist in the 20 kilometres walk. His first Olympic Games were at Barcelona 1992, where he finished 22nd. At Atlanta 1996, he just missed out on a medal when he finished fourth; the best position obtained by an Australian walker at the Olympics since Noel Freeman’s same result, in the event, at Tokyo 1964. At his home Olympics at Sydney, A’Hern rounded off his Olympic career by finishing tenth.
Between his Olympic appearances, he won back-to-back walking gold medals at the Commonwealth Games at Victoria, Canada in 1994 and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1998. Whilst competing at five world athletics championships, his best placing was 11th in the 20 kilometres walk at Gothenburg, Sweden in 1995. A’Hern won 12 titles at the Australian track and field and walking championships.
