Neville's Story

1943 –

At Rome 1960, two teenaged Australians challenged the mighty Americans in the 200 metres butterfly. Neville Hayes (16-years- old) finished second behind the world record-breaking Mike Troy of the United States and Kevin Berry (15-years-old) finished sixth. Hayes won another silver medal at Rome when he teamed with David Theile, Terry Gathercole and Geoff Shipton to come in behind the US in the inaugural staging of the men's 4x100m medley relay. At the Empire and Commonwealth Games at Perth 1962, Hayes won further silver medals, behind Kevin Berry, in the 110 yards and 220 yards butterfly events. Berry went on to claim the Olympic crown in the 200 metres butterfly at Tokyo 1964.
