Michelle's Story
1966 -
Dual Olympian Michelle Capes joined her sister Lee as members of the women’s team in Seoul that won Australia’s first hockey gold medal. A West Australian, Capes was a key contributor for the Hockeyroos throughout the tournament. After winning their way to the semi-final, the team beat the Netherlands, the reigning world and Olympic champions, 3-2. In the final the team had to overcome host nation South Korea, who were cheered on by 26,000 screaming fans. After a scoreless first half, two Aussie goals, including one by her sister, Lee, secured a famous 2-0 victory. Capes returned to the Games in 1992, playing under her married name of Hager after her marriage to fellow Australian hockey Olympian, Mark. The team placed fifth.
