Michele's Story

1939 –

At Melbourne 1956, only the winner of the high jump, Mildred McDaniel of the United States with 1.76m, jumped higher than the 1.67m cleared by the then Michelle Mason. Through the count-back system, Mason ultimately finished sixth. In fifth place was the mighty Iolanda Balas of Romania. By Tokyo 1964, Balas had become the first woman to clear 6 feet (1.83 metres) and was the defending Olympic champion from Rome 1960. At Tokyo, Michele Mason, who was competing under her married name of Brown and had become the second woman to clear 6 feet, finished second to Balas. At the Empire and Commonwealth Games Mason Brown won gold medals at Cardiff 1958 and Kingston 1966 and a bronze medal at Perth 1962.
