Megan's Story
1972 –
Megan Still was identified in her high school years as a potential rower by a national talent identification program. Within two years, she was competing at the 1990 world junior championships. At Barcelona 1992, Still was a member of women’s coxless four that finished sixth. Also in that Barcelona crew was Kate Slatter. The coxless four, with Still and Slatter on board, won a bronze medal at the 1994 world championships. The following year, Still and Slatter were rowing as a coxless pair and duly became world champions. That win was the first by an Australian women’s crew in an Olympic-category event at the Olympic Games or the world championships.
At Atlanta 1996 Still and Slatter prevailed over an equally fancied American crew to claim the first Olympic title by an Australian women’s crew. On the same day, their gold medal was matched by the Oarsome Foursome (Ginn, Tomkins, McKay, Green) and supplemented by a silver medal from the men’s coxless pair to make it the best day for Australian rowing at an Olympic regatta. The medal-winning feats of that day were matched by the gold medals of the coxless pair (Ginn, Free) and double sculls (Crawshay, Brennan) and the silver medal of the coxless four (Ryan, Marburg, McKenzie-McHarg, Hegerty) on the same day at Beijing 2008.
