Meagen's Story
Meagen Nay burst onto the Australian Olympic Team by breaking one of the oldest Australian records. Nicole Stevenson’s 200m backstroke record set at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics was swallowed by Nay at the 2008 Olympic Trials. In doing so, Nay became the first female Australian swimmer to follow the Olympic footsteps of her father. Robbie Nay swam at the 1972 Munich Olympics but tragically never got to see his daughter swim, having been killed in a car accident in 1992. Nay qualified for the 200m backstroke final in Beijing and finished 7th.
Always regarded of one of the great personalities of the Australian swim team, Nay showed extraordinary courage to take the blocks in the relay heats at the 2009 World Championships in Rome after learning the shocking news that her brother Amos had been killed in a car accident. Nay is ever inspiring and won an incredible two gold medals in the 200m backstroke and 4 x 200m freestyle relay at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Nay’s father had won gold at the 1974 Commonwealth Games.
Nay went on to qualify for her second Olympic Games in London, again competing in the 200m backstroke. In 2012 Nay went on to finish fifth in the final as the USA’s Missy Franklin broke the world record in the process of claiming the gold medal.
