Matthew Simon had a great start to his international football career with the Young Socceroos. Simon scored a hat-trick against the Republic of Ireland in the semi-finals at the Intercontinental Cup, attracting the attention of Pim Verbeek. Simon was called into the Australian team for the World Cup Qualifiers. The Central Coast Mariners striker made his Olympic debut in 2008. The Australians finished in eleventh place in Beijing.
