HAVE A GO AT OLYMPIC SPORTS
Matthew's Story
1975 -
Matthew Long teamed with James Tomkins in the coxed pair after Drew Ginn succumbed to a back injury in the months leading up to Sydney 2000. Tomkins and Ginn had rowed together in the successful Oarsome Foursome at Atlanta 1996 and were the 1999 world champions in the pairs. Long had been a reserve for the Olympic eight prior to his teaming with Tomkins.
For Sydney, the pair, who both came from the same famous Melbourne rowing club (Mercantile) as Ginn, named their boat Drew Ginn. At Penrith, they were languishing in fifth place with 500 metres to go before a storming finish saw them pick up the bronze medal behind France and the United States.
