Maddison's Story

Maddison Brooks grew up in a hockey family, with her father Alistair, mother Susan, brother Josh and twin sister Taylor all playing the sport at a high level.

Although hockey was her first love, Maddison was a sporty kid, who also excelled at cricket, football and touch football.

“Maddi has always loved participating in all sports, particularly ball sports,” her mum said.

“She demonstrated her persistence when she was three and we were playing mini-golf on a family holiday to the Gold Coast, where I can recall she was so determined to put the ball in the hole – even if it did take 35 shots for one tricky hole!”

As a 12-year-old, Maddison was the youngest competitor at hockey’s U15 national championships in 2017 – and the star of the tournament. Despite the fact she was two years younger than most of her opponents, she was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

Maddison, who plays for the Tassie Tigers in the Hockey One league, made her debut for the Australian under-21 team, the Jillaroos, at the 2022 Junior Oceania Cup, where Australia won gold.

The skilled midfielder debuted for the Hockeyroos in early 2023 as an 18 year old and scored her maiden international goal in a Test against New Zealand in a FIH Pro League series in Christchurch.

She retained her spot in the team that torched India in a three-Test series in Adelaide, scoring her second international goal.

Maddison racked up 32 international appearances prior to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she was brought into the team late as an injury replacement for Alice Arnott.

At the Paris 2024 Olympics Maddison and the Hockeyroos opened their tournament with three-straight wins against South Africa (2-1), Great Britain (4-0) and the United States (3-0) in which Maddison scored her first Olympic goal.

A draw with Argentina (3-3) and a win against Spain (3-1) closed the group stage, with the Hockeyroos advancing into a quarter-final against China. Coached by Australian Olympic champion Alyson Annan, China prevailed 3-2 to end the Hockeyroos' campaign.

Away from the hockey field, Maddison is completing a bachelor of business (sports management) and works part-time in marketing and administration for Cricket Tasmania.
