Luke Willian is a Queenslander who started competing in triathlons back in 2008 because his brother wanted to try it.
He first represented Australia at the 2012 Devonport OTU Triathlon Oceania Championships. It was here he first got a sense of what it meant to represent Australia on the world stage, finishing 17th in time of 1:03:38.
Luke’s first World Cup was in 2015, where he finished in the top half of the field in 31st position. Mooloolaba holds a special place in the Brisbane man’s heart, with it being where Luke won the 2017 World Cup and where he announced himself on the world stage in front of an adoring home crowd.
A year later Luke debuted at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. On this occasion, Luke finished eighth with a time of 53:33.
Luke started 2024 in a strong manner, coming second in the men's individual 2024 Oceania Triathlon Sprint Championships held in Devonport, Tasmania. A day later Luke also helped Australia win the mixed relay championship alongside fellow Australians - Tara Sosinski, Brandon Copeland and Jaz Hedgeland. Luke also came fourth in the 2024 World Triathlon Cup held in Hong Kong and won the World Triathlon Cup in Wollongong.
He confirmed his nomination for the Australian Olympic Team by winning bronze at the Yokohama World Triathlon Championship Series event in Japan in May, in the same race Paris 2024 teammate Matt Hauser finished came second.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics Luke had a difficult swim in the individual event and despite pushing hard on the bike, he stayed behind the lead group and finished 42nd.
Then with the Aussie triathlon mixed relay team of Natalie Van Coevorden, Matt Hauser and Sophie Linn, they finished 12th in 1:28.50.
On top of Luke’s triathlon career, Luke has completed a Bachelor of Business, Majoring in Finance and Accounting from the Queensland University of Technology.
