About Lachlan

2021 has already been a huge year for Lachlan Miller after becoming a father for the first time in June, when he and partner Elly welcome baby Billy into the world. The next week Lachlan was off to Townsville for the Oceania Sevens and then into an Olympic training camp in Darwin, to simulate the hotter conditions of a northern hemisphere summer in Tokyo.

“It is tough but at the end of the day if you win gold, and your son can watch it in a couple of years, it is pretty special,” Lachlan said.

From Southern Cross University club in Coffs Harbour, Lachlan made his Sevens World Series debut in April 2019 in Hong Kong. Two weeks later in the Singapore leg he scored against France and then a length-of-the-field try against Hong Kong in back-to-back victories.

He scored against Japan in February 2020 in the Sydney leg of the 2019-20 World Sevens Series before a triumphant Los Angeles tournament. Lachlan scored against Samoa and the USA in the build-up to the Australians facing New Zealand for the bronze medal.

The next World Series leg in Vancouver and Lachlan had his most successful tournament yet, scoring against Scotland, Samoa, Canada, and a hat-trick against the USA in the 29-7 win. In the final, Australia finished runner-up after being defeated by New Zealand 17-14.

Lachlan made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, representing Australia in the Men's Rugby Sevens. Miller would score twice in Australia's 42-5 group stage victory over South Korea, pushing the squad onto the quarter-finals of the tournament. There they would face Fiji and unfortunately be eliminated from medal contention after losing 19-0.

Lachlan would add two more tries to his tally in the back end of the tournament, against both South Africa and Canada. Becoming the Australian to score the most tries in the Tokyo 2020 games, and earning Australia a 7th overall finish at the competition.
