Ky's Story
Ky Hurst was an Ironman Champion before setting his sights on becoming an Olympian. Hurst tried to qualify for the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Teams in the 1500m freestyle, but the introduction of the 10km open water marathon swim in Beijing 2008 was the perfect event for a man regarded as the greatest surf swimmer of his generation. Hurst finally qualified for an Olympic team after finishing fifth at the 2008 Open Water Swimming World Championships. At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Hurst finished 11th.
He returned to Olympic competition four years on having amassed seven Australian Ironman titles. Competing at the London 2012 Games, Hurst finished 20th in the open water swim in Hyde Park’s Serpentine as Tunisia’s Oussama Mellouli claimed gold.
