Kim's Story

Kim Small was a member of the women’s hockey team that won a gold medal in Seoul. It was not only the first time Australia had won a gold medal in hockey, but also the first gold in any team sport at the Olympics. The team played with great spirit throughout the tournament. It completed its preliminary round matches with two wins and a draw, then beat the Netherlands, the reigning Olympic and world champions, 3-2 in the semi-final. This set up a thrilling final against South Korea, the host nation, in front of 26,000 passionate Korean fans. After a scoreless first half, Australia scored twice in the second half to record a famous 2-0 victory.
