Kevin's Story
Kevin Nichols won gold alongside Michael Grenda, Michael Turtur and Dean Woods in the men’s 4000m team pursuit in 1984. It was a case of third time lucky for Nichols, the outstanding Sydneysider having previously represented Australia at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics without winning a medal. However, he had won gold medals at the 1978 and 1982 Commonwealth Games, and his experience and finishing burst proved invaluable to the pursuit team. The foursome, dubbed ‘Charlie’s Angels’ because they were coached by Charlie Walsh, were the first Aussie cyclists to win Olympic gold since 1956.
