Ken's Story
1926 – 1974
Ken Caves, from Queensland, competed in the cycling road races at London 1948 and Helsinki 1952. At London only Jack Hoobin and Russell Mockridge finished the race; Caves and Jim Nestor didn’t. Indeed only 28 of the 101 who started finished. As a result of only two Australians finishing the race, the squad did not have the requisite three finishers to be a contender for the team gold medal.
Caves again competed at Helsinki, on the road and the track, where he was captain of the cycling team. He joined with Peter Nelson, Peter Prior and Jim Nevin in the early rounds of the 4000 metres team pursuit. In the road race, only Nevin and Prior finished; Caves and Nelson did not. Hence a result for Australia in the team race was impossible.
