Justin's Story
1980 –
Justin Norris squeezed into the final of the 200 metres butterfly at the Sydney Olympic Games after a barnstorming finish in his semi final. In the race for the gold medal, Norris tried a different tactic by leading out and trying to hold on to the final wall. He almost made it, but was overtaken by the eventual winner, Tom Malchow of the United States, and the 1998 world champion, Denys Sylant’yev of Russia.
In winning bronze, Norris broke the Commonwealth record when he improved his personal best by almost 1.5 seconds. In fifth place was a 15-year-old Michael Phelps.
Norris narrowly missed a place in the 200m fly final at Athens 2004.
