About Joshua

Joshua Simmonds grew up playing and competing in hockey, representing his home state of Victoria.

He made his junior international debut in 2015 at the Sultan of Johor Cup, playing in the U21 team and finishing in fifth. In 2016, he went onto to represent Australia at the Junior World Cup.

At just 20-years-old Josh scored in three games for the Victoria Vikings on their way to the 2017 AHL (Australia Hockey League) gold medal over the WA Thundersticks. His performance in this game confirmed he was certainly one to watch.

Simmonds made his senior international debut in 2018, playing a test match against Argentina held in Darwin. Later in the year, the defender was named to the 2019 Kookaburras squad and has continued to represent the team since.

In 2019, at 25, he won gold at the FIH Pro League Final in The Netherlands, following a 3-2 win over Belgium.

Josh made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, travelling amongst his fellow Kookaburras. The team would go undefeated in the tournament's group stage and overcome difficult opposition Netherlands & Germany to reach to final of the tournament. They would, however, fall short of the Gold medal, losing to Belgium in the Olympic final in a tense penalty shootout. However, this would earn Simmonds his first Olympic medal (Silver) in his debut at the games.
