Josh's Story

Born the son of two semi-professional basketballers, Josh Green took to the game quickly and never looked back.

Josh started playing organised basketball as a five-year-old, where his mother was coaching his teams. As an 11-year-old, he captained the NSW Metro side to a national championship.

Two years later Josh relocated with his family to Phoenix, Arizona, where his talents on the hardwood were honed against the best junior competition in the world.

Once in Arizona he enrolled at Mountain Ridge High School and quickly began to impress scouts and recruiters. In 2017, Josh transferred to the IMG Academy in Florida, a boarding school known for its development of high school basketball prospects.

Josh scored 19 points in his last high school game to lead IMG to victory in the national championship final over La Lumiere and was awarded the game’s Most Valuable Player award.

After receiving offers to play collegiately for North Carolina, Villanova, Kansas and the University of Southern California, he chose to commit to the University of Arizona. A standout year for the Wildcats positioned the Sydney native to forego his college eligibility and enter the 2020 NBA Draft, where he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the 18th pick of the first round.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, in 2021, Josh and the Boomers lifted Australia to the bronze medal, defeating Slovenia in the bronze medal match 107-93.

The dual Olympian helped achieved our nation's first men's basketball Olympic medal since Australia made its men's basketball Olympic debut in 1956. Josh played in five matches for the Boomers off the bench.

Josh made his NBA debut in late 2020. He averaged 2.6 points and 2.0 boards per game as a rookie for the Mavericks, showing promise as an energetic defender, smart passer and flashy finisher at the rim.

In the 2022-23 season, he averaged 9.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and shot a career-high 40.2 per cent from beyond the arc.

Josh played a key role for the Boomers at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, held in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. Although the Boomers failed to advance to the elimination rounds, they did secure a berth at the Paris Olympics, with Josh averaging 8.2 points, 2 rebounds and 1.4 assists.

Josh re-signed with the Mavericks in October 2023 and in the 2023-24 season, he averaged 8.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists on a team that went to the NBA Finals and included fellow Aussie Olympian Dante Exum.

After the Finals, which their opponents the Boston Celtics won 4-1 in the best of seven series, Josh Green was traded to the Charlotte Hornets as part of a deal that sent Klay Thompson to the Mavericks.

At the Paris 2024 Olympics Josh and the Boomers started on a strong note, defeating Spain 92-80 in what was regarded as the toughest group in the tournament. In 22 minutes against Spain with Josh on the floor, the Boomers outscored Spain by 17 points.

Losses followed against Canada (93-83) and Greece (77-71) to close the group stage, setting up a quarter-finals clash against Serbia.

The Boomers pushed the Serbians into overtime, but Serbia took control of overtime (95-90) to knock Australia out of the tournament.
