John's Story
1938 –
At both of his appearances in the 100m backstroke at the Olympics John Monckton finished behind one of the greatest all-time exponents of the stoke in countryman David Theile. At Melbourne 1956, Monckton won the silver medal and at Rome 1960, he finished fifth to Theile's first. In Thiele's absence, due to study commitments, from the Empire and Commonwealth Games at Cardiff 1958 Monckton won the 110 yards backstroke and swam the backstroke leg in the victorious Australian 4x110 yards medley relay team.
