John's Story

1927 – 2000

Jack Hoobin competed on the velodrome and the road at London 1948. He joined with Sid Patterson, Jim Nestor and Russell Mockridge to reach the quarter-finals of the 4000 metres team pursuit. In the road race, he finished seventh, the best result by an Australian in the event until Ray Bilney’s fourth at Tokyo 1964. Of the other three Australians in the road race, Russell Mockridge, Ken Caves and Jim Nestor, only the former completed the course (26th) and hence Australia did not have the requisite three finishers to be a contender for the team road race gold medal.

In 1950, Hoobin became the only Australian to win the amateur road race world championship. Hoobin was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1991.
