John's Story
David Forbes and John Anderson won the gold medal in Star class sailing at Munich 1972. On the same day, John Cuneo, John Shaw and Anderson’s twin, Tom, won another gold medal in the Dragons. Twins winning gold medals on the same day in different events is a unique occurrence at the Olympic Games.
Anderson, Forbes and Denis O’Neil competed at Montreal 1976, finishing eleventh in Solings. Anderson had a long and varied career in Australian and international sailing world, including America’s and Admiral’s Cups campaigns. He was awarded an OAM for 1987 ‘in recognition of service to sailing’. In 1999 he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame at the same time as his twin brother.
