Joanne's Story

1979 -

Joanne Fox won a gold medal for Australia in women’s water polo at Sydney 2000. The Victorian was the youngest member of the team at age 21. Her speed and offensive ability made her a key contributor during the tournament. Women’s water polo had never been played at the Games before Sydney but it proved a huge success with fans. In the semi-final, Australia scored two goals in the final 90 seconds to beat Russia 7-6. The gold medal final was even more dramatic, with the team beating the United States 4-3 when Yvette Higgins scored with 1.3 seconds left on the clock. Fox returned to the Olympics in Athens, where the team finished fourth, losing the bronze medal final 6-5 to the US.
