Janice's Story

Jan Andrew (Thornett) finished third in the 100m butterfly at Rome 1960. She joined with Marilyn Wilson, Rosemary Lassig and the great Dawn Fraser to win the silver medal, behind the United States, in the inaugural staging of the women's 4x100m medley relay. In April 1961, Andrew set a world record for the 100m butterfly in Tokyo. Within a year of setting that world record, she had retired from competitive swimming, whilst still a teenager.
