Competing since the age of seven, Janelle Shepherd was ranked third in Australia leading up to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Shepherd missed out on a spot in the 2004 Olympic Team, but a silver medal at the 2005 Australian Youth Olympic Festival kept her Olympic dream alive. Shepherd was selected in the heavyweight division at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. On her Olympic debut Shepherd won two rounds.
