Isabella's Story
Isabella Nasser always seemed destined to represent Australia in Rugby Sevens given the strong roots her family has in the sport.
Isabella grew up in South Brisbane and attended Brisbane State High School, where rugby was a big part of her childhood. Her father Brendan played for the Queensland Reds in the Super Rugby, as well as featuring for the Wallabies on eight occasions between 1989 and 1991. The inspiration from her father was not limited to just Isabella, as her older brother Josh has also played 16 matches for the Reds.
Despite the strong rugby foundations in her family, Isabella wasn't immediately drawn to the sport. At a young age she instead participated in water polo, swimming and touch football.
It wasn't until Isabella watched Australia's gold medal victory in the Sevens at the Rio 2016 Olympics that Isabella decided to give the sport a go, first playing through school.
Just two years into her career, Isabella played for Queensland at the Youth Girls Sevens National Championship in 2018.
In 2019, Isabella joined the University of Queensland for the Uni 7s tournament and became a regular in the side. In 2022 she received a sporting scholarship at the university for her development in Sevens.
Isabella quickly rose through the ranks, representing the Australia 'A' team in invitational tournaments. Following a standout series in Dubai where Isabella led the team to first place, she was added to Australia's squad for the 2022 Cape Town Sevens.
She debuted in the tournament and put in a solid performance as Australia progressed to the final before going down against New Zealand.
Isabella returned to the Australia A team in January of 2023, captaining the side at the Coral Coast Sevens Held in Fiji.
Isabella won her first tournament in the World Series in December of 2023 at the Dubai Sevens. She scored in Australia's crushing victory over Japan in the group stages before playing in the final where Australia defeated New Zealand, ending the Black Ferns 41-game unbeaten run.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics Isabella and the team were a perfect three wins from three games in the pool stage. They took care of Ireland in the quarter-finals 40-7 before a strong Canadian team halted Australia's run in the semi-finals, inflicting a 21-12 loss.
In a tense fight for a bronze medal against the USA, the Americans scored a converted try after time expired for a 14-12 score to relegate the Aussies to fourth place.
