Iain's Story

Iain Jensen teamed up with Beijing Olympian Nathan Outteridge in 2009 after he parted ways with Olympic teammate Ben Austin. The pair made no delay stamping their mark, winning the 49er World Championships in Italy - just their second regatta together.

Having finished second at the 2010 World Championships the pair returned to winning form as they took out the 2011 World Championship in Perth and then the Olympic Test event at Weymouth.

Despite being earmarked as gold medal favourites for the London Games the pair did not succumb to the pressure as they took the lead in the regatta at the end of the third of fifteen races and never looked back. The pair’s five wins, including three in the last four regular races, helped to ensure that they could not be beaten prior to the medal race as Jensen claimed gold at the age of 24 on his Olympic debut.

Jensen and Outteridge returned to defend their title at Rio 2016, however New Zealand had already secured the gold heading into the final day of competition. They started the third day of competition three points behind second place Germany.

To win silver they needed to finish two places ahead of Germany in the medal race, worth double points, and they achieved their goal by crossing the line fourth with the Germans back in eighth.
