Henry's Story
1893 - 1952
At Antwerp 1920, Harry Hay was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the 100 and 400 metres freestyle events. In the 4 x 200 metres relay, he joined with Frank Beaurepaire, Bill Herald and Ivan Stedman to claim the silver medal behind the ever-powerful Americans. The youngster of the swimming team, Keith Kirkland, swam in the heat of the relay but was replaced by Beaurepaire for the final.
In later life, Hay, who hailed from Manly like so many other crack swimmers of the time, became a noted coach, administrator and masseur in surfing and swimming and was involved with a number of Olympic teams. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, he was Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton’s coach. Hay served in World War I.
