Hector's Story
1931 – 1960
By finishing third in the 100m at Melbourne 1956, Hec Hogan won the first medal by Australian men in Olympic sprinting since Stanley Rowley finished third in the 60m, 100m and 200m at Paris 1900. Hogan, a joint world record holder for the 100 yards (9.3 seconds), also made the quarter-finals of the 200 metres and was part of the Australian quartet that just missed on making the final in the 4x100 metres relay. At the Empire and Commonwealth Games at Vancouver 1954 Hogan won bronze medals in the 100 yards and the 4x110 yards and 4x440 yards relays, together with fifth placings in the 220 yards and long jump. At Cardiff 1958, he again won a bronze medal in the 4x110 yards relay. Whilst the Olympics were being staged at Rome 1960 Hogan died of leukaemia in his native Brisbane.
