Grant's Story
1980 –
Grant Schubert won two medals for Australia in men’s hockey: gold in 2004 and bronze in 2008. A striker, Schubert was at his best in the Athens semi-final against Spain. He scored two goals in two minutes in the second half to seal Australia’s 6-3 win. Waiting in the final was two-time defending champion the Netherlands. With scores tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time, a goal by Jamie Dwyer in the eighth minute of extra time secured the famous 2-1 victory. In Beijing, a knee injury to Schubert in the final preliminary round game dampened the Kookaburras’ chances of defending its title. He missed both the semi-final, a 3-2 loss to Spain, and the bronze medal final, which Australia won 6-2 against the Netherlands.
