Gordon's Story
1925 – 2006
In placing second in the triple jump, then known as the hop, step and jump, at London 1948 George Avery maintained Australia's strong performances in that event at the Olympic Games. AW (Nick) Winter had won the gold medal in Paris 1924 and Jack Metcalfe the bronze medal at Berlin 1936. Avery's consistent jumping in the preliminary rounds had indicated that he was a good chance of winning the gold medal but in the final he missed the ultimate prize by a mere four centimetres (less than two inches).
