Glenn's Story
Heading into his second Olympic Games appearances, Glenn Turner was one of the Kookaburras' most lethal strikers having scoring close to 100 goals for Australia as well as claiming Commonwealth, World Cup and Champions Trophy titles.
The 2016 Aussie Olympic campaign kicked off with a 2-1 win over trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand but despite starting strong, the side then suffered back-to-back 1-0 losses to Spain and Belgium. Determined to claim their third straight Olympic medal, the side then secured a 2-1 win over Great Britain and a 9-0 victory over Brazil which included a second quarter hat-trick from Turner in just six minutes. The Aussies had set themselves up for a quarter-final clash against the number 2 ranked side, the Netherlands but hopes of a gold medal quickly faded as the Dutch secured a 4-0 win, knocking the green and gold favourites out of the Olympic competition.
Turner got into the sport when he was five as a result of a bet between his father and their neighbours in Bowral. Turner's father played rugby league but their neighbours played hockey. They made a bet that whoever's team finished higher that year, then the two sons who were both the same age would play that sport.
After playing for domestically for the Canberra Lakers, he made his Kookaburras debut in 2009 against Germany, before scoring a double in his fifth international against England to start a steady flow of goals for the striker.
Turner was at his lethal best when he scored the decisive goal in the 2-1 semi-final victory over the Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup where Australia went on to win gold and helped the Aussie side win their second bronze medal at London.
The Australian forward helped the claim a top of the podium finish at the prestigious World League Final in Raipur, before packing his bags again to join the Kalinga Lancers in the 2016 Coal Hockey India League, who finished 2016 runners-up to the Jaypee Punjab Warriors. Off the pitch, Turner juggles his hockey commitment with his young family, and enjoys reading athlete autobiographies. Turner is also NRL fanatic, supporting the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
