Georgii's Story
Georgii Okorokov started wrestling in the Village of Amga in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), in eastern Russia. Georgii would travel from his home village of Bolugur to get to his wrestling club during his junior years. His first major European event came in 2015 at the Grand Prix of Paris.
His most prestigious junior career moment came in 2016 after winning the European Championship in the 50kg freestyle division hosted in Romania. Georgii’s performance at the tournament left him unbeaten for the event, defeating opponents from Türkiye, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
In 2017 Georgii moved to Australia and into the senior divisions of freestyle wrestling. He was identified by Wrestling Australia as a potential talent for the future and was made part of the high-performance squad whilst assisting in upskilling local Australian wrestling talent.
Competing for Australia since 2022, Georgii’s best result came in the 2022 World Championship, where he finished 10th out of 31 competitors in the 57kg freestyle division.
Georgii moved up to the 65kg Olympic weight class in 2023 where he competed again in the World Championships and for the first time in the Oceania Championships. Whilst unable to follow up his impressive debut of 10th on the world stage, Georgii managed to win his first senior continental event.
Georgii went undefeated through all of his matchups in the 2023 Oceania Championship, beating fellow Aussie Liam Gusti as well as competitors from New Zealand, Palau and Guam.
Georgii defended his 2023 Oceania Championship in 2024, sweeping his matchups in the 65kg division and paving the road for the African and Oceania Olympic Game Qualifier event in Egypt. In the qualifiers, he battled opponents from Cameroon, Cabo Verde and Angola. Georgii was victorious in all his qualifying matches and booked his ticket to Paris 2024 with a victory by superiority over Nkunga Ngonda (ANG).
The results put the 28-year-old ranked 27th in the world as of May 2024, ahead of his Olympic debut in Paris.
In the men’s freestyle 65kg at the Olympics, Georgii took on Puerto Rican Sebastien Rivera in the opening round, losing 12-2. There was no repechage for Georgii, which meant he was eliminated from the competition.
