Georgie's Story
Born in the South Australian country town of Berri, Georgina ‘Georgie’ Parker played her first game of hockey on her eighth birthday. Ever since, she dreamt of competing at the Olympics. In 2016 that dream came true as Parker made her Olympic debut in Rio.
The Aussies had a tough start to their 2016 Olympic campaign, going down 2-1 against both Great Britain and the USA in their opening two pool matches. Despite this disappointment, the side went on to secure three consecutive wins against India, Argentina and Japan, leaving them to face trans-tasman rivals New Zealand in the quarter final. Hopes of a medal finish were dashed as the Aussies went down 4-2 to the Kiwis, leaving the ladies to finish in 6th place.
Parker won silver at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival after narrowly going down to Great Britain 2-3 in the final. Two years later she joined the senior national side in the Netherlands, where Australia placed sixth in the Champions Trophy.
In 2013 the forward won gold in the World League Semi-Final in England, and silver at the World League Final in Argentina. The following year she won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and silver in the Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands.
Parker is known as the squad’s resident musician and jazz enthusiast. Her love for music developed over her school years where she learnt to play the piano and trumpet, and sung in school choirs.
