Geoffrey's Story
1941 –
Geoff Shipton teamed with David Theile, Terry Gathercole and Neville Hayes to come in behind the powerful United States in the inaugural staging of the men's 4 x 100 metres medley relay at Rome 1960. He had swum with Julian Carroll, Bill Burton and Kevin Berry in the heat of the relay. Shipton was an interesting choice to swim the anchor leg as he did not swim in the individual 100 metres freestyle. At the 1958 Cardiff British Empire and Commonwealth Games, he finished third behind John Devitt and Gary Chapman in the 110 yards freestyle.
